FWC International Women's Day Event
By Gloria Jack
The Forum for Women of the Caribbean (FWC) held their annual international women's day event on 8 th March at the Grand Union Village, Greenford.
The group's objective is raising awareness of issues affecting women of the Caribbean and the event's theme this year “Sisters take control of their health was attend by approximately 60 people.
The group gave information about the health situation in the Caribbean and rallied support in their campaign to address raise awareness and address this issue. Further talks and information was given on hypertension and diabetics the two most common conditions suffered by African-Caribbean people, and a presentation on the stages of the menopause.
The event was also supported by a number of stall holders offering a delightful array of goods and services from natural soaps and body lotions, hand-made cards, jewellery, books on health and natural aloe vera health products; and to receive information of healthy eating and sample some healthy foods and natural juices. If that wasn't enough there was also the opportunity to receive a mini massage and get advice on the powers of hypnotherapy. The event closed with some powerful poetry in celebration of women.
Additional comment from Louise Brown: one of the important aims of FWC's International Women's Day event, and in line with theme, was to highlight the IMF and World Bank's policies in the Caribbean and their impact on women. For more information on this campaign, click on 'Campaigns' in the index.
